Tornadoes Hit Oklahoma; One Dead and Several Injured; Photo

A tornado killed at least one person Wednesday in Sand Springs, near Tulsa. Another tornado touched down in Moore, near Oklahoma City, before 7 p.m.

One person died in Sand Springs, Oklahoma, Wednesday when a tornado touched down in a mobile home park.

Authorities confirmed to reporters at the scene that one person in the Sand Springs mobile home park died in the tornado, Tulsa World reported. Another person was in critical condition, and according to the Associated Press multiple others were injured.


A tornado also charged through Moore, near Oklahoma City, leaving destruction in its wake.

The damage in and around Moore included downed power lines and trees, as well as at least one traffic accident involving a semi truck, KFOR reported. The crash forced the closure of Interstate 35 Wednesday evening.

In an on-air interview with KFOR, Moore Mayor Glenn Lewis said Tuesday that the storm “just came out of nowhere.” Lewis also said he heard the tornado pass over head from inside a shelter.

Video from KFOR showed bursts of light as power lines burst in the Oklahoma City area.

Fat shamers could be given the same treatment as sexists and racists if a group of obesity researchers get their way.

Dr Sarah Jackson, from University College London, said fattism is real and should fall under discrimination law that protects people from being targeted for their race, age or gender.

In a study of 5,000 adults she found that overweight people who had been victimised had a lower quality of life and showed signs of depression.

Among the examples of fattism, she said people were:

    Given poorer service
    Joked about threatened
    Thought to be less intelligent

Dr Jackson told the Daily Mail: ‘In the United Kingdom, the Equality Act 2010 legally protects individuals from discrimination on the basis of age, sex, race, disability, religion or beliefs, sexual orientation, marital status, pregnancy, or gender reassignment; making it clear that discriminatory behaviour of this nature is not to be accepted.

‘However, our results indicate that discriminatory experiences contribute to poorer psychological wellbeing in individuals with obesity, but there are currently no laws prohibiting weight discrimination.

‘This might send the message to people that weight discrimination is socially acceptable.’

Many of us spend our lives worrying we don’t get enough sleep – but sleeping too much could be even more dangerous.

University of Warwick researchers analysed 16 studies including sleep data for more than a million people.

Professor Franco Cappuccio found that people who sleep more than eight hours are at risk of dying earlier than those who sleep for six to eight hours.

Professor Cappuccio looked at long-term studies analysing the mortality of people according to how much they slept.

After ten years, 12% of people who slept less than six hours had died – but 30% of those who slept more than eight hours had died.

The increase in risk of death is equivalent to drinking several cups of coffee per day, the researchers warned.

Cappuccio corrected his data to account for people who are depressed, or using sleep medication – and believes that people who sleep more than eight hours per night may have a serious underlying illness which is causing them to sleep longer.

So did the guys from Outrageous Acts of Science – so they got some lava, got some ice, and started filming.

None of them predicted the result.

It looks at first as if the lava is bubbling, but that’s not actually what’s happening.

‘The lava is so hot than when it’s poured onto the ice, the ice instantly turns not just into water but straight into steam,’ explains nuclear chemist Alistair Linsell.

‘This steam has to escape so it bubbles through the lava, so while it looks like the lava itself is boiling it’s actually the steam being produced that is trying to escape,’ adds materials chemist Sujata Kundu.

The cooling lava then traps the bubbles inside the rock.

‘It’s kind of like a natural form of glass-making,’ says Linsell.

According to Linsell, the steam is the reason that the lava flows and doesn’t just burn straight through the ice. It forms a bed directly under the lava, creating very little friction.

Lauren Barri-Holstein, a PhD student and performance artist, showed the clip as part of an introduction to their latest drama module at Queen Mary University, east London.

Originally designed as promotional material for her controversial stage show Splat!, Ms Barri-Holstein’s ‘extreme’ video left several students shocked, according to The Tab.


‘I honestly didn’t know how to react,’ one unnamed student told the student publication. ‘I don’t think I’ll ever be able to look her in the eye in person, it’s just weird.

‘It’s not even the fact we saw her lady parts, it’s the fact I literally have no idea how the clip was in any way related to this module.

‘It was just so extreme and I don’t understand why it was in any way necessary.’

The show is described as ‘feminist performance art concerned with the female body’ and features backing music by Leona Lewis and Nicole Scherzinger.

In the most powerful scenes, Ms Barri-Holstein is pictured pushing a condom out of her vagina, masturbating with a sword into another actress’ mouth, and swinging naked from the roof of the theatre covered in stage blood.

Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, debunked allegations that he ordered the policemen and vigilante groups to arrest members of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Fayose, while reacting to an allegation credited to Babafemi Ojudu, representing the Ekiti Central, said the allegation was an attempt by the APC to cause confusion since the party knew it could not win the general elections.

According to a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Idowu Adelusi, Fayose vowed to retrieve government vehicles still in the custody of political appointees under Kayode Fayemi administration because they refused to pay up.

“The vehicles were given to them under monetisation policy of the last administration. Since they have refused to pay up for the vehicles, the government will certainly retrieve them. I don’t know when retrieval of vehicles amounted to arrest of APC members. When Fayemi came to power in 2010, he equally retrieved vehicles in the hands of political appointees of Segun Oni. The affected appointees did not complain and neither did they go to the press to disparage Fayemi for doing so.

Li Tan, 23, from Dancheng Township, eastern China, stuck the pads to the car after becoming convinced that boyfriend De Wu, 24, was having an affair.

But in reality, he had been staying at a friend’s house while he planned a surprise birthday party for his girlfriend.

It isn’t clear whether the birthday party went ahead in the end, but we wouldn’t bet on it.

It’s pretty tough being a funeral director and having to deal with the emotions of grieving families and dead bodies on a daily basis.

But it got even worse for an undertaker in Germany, who passed out with shock when a ‘dead’ woman opened the lid of her coffin and groaned ‘Where am I?’

When the funeral director eventually woke from his horrific ordeal, he saw the elderly woman lying in the coffin with both eyes open.

Although an ambulance rushed to the funeral home to take the woman to a local hospital, she fell ill and died on Monday afternoon.

Now, a police investigation is hoping to find out how the woman was pronounced dead in the first place.

It’s been reported that a carer found the woman in bed at the nursing home where she lived, and wasn’t breathing.

A doctor was called to the home, and the woman was pronounced dead before being taken to the funeral directors.

After she was discovered still to be alive, the unnamed funeral director called an ambulance, and paramedics noted that she still had a pulse.

Lother Burger, the head of the retirement home where the woman lived, said: ‘This is terrible and inexplicable. We are being devoured by the press, we are being pilloried.’

An investigation will determine if there had been a failure in recording the woman’s death.
